About Me

BIO

Heidi Voet Smith is a licensed professional counselor in both Texas and Maine and is also a licensed counselor supervisor. Heidi is almost a native Texan, as she has lived in Dallas since she was 3 years old! Heidi attended Trinity Christian Academy while growing up and got her bachelor’s degree at Baylor University. After getting her master’s in counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2003, Heidi became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2005. Heidi married her husband Michael, who is originally from Maine, in 2008. From then on, summer trips to Maine became the annual highlight of their year. Heidi and her husband live in Richardson with their 11-year-old son, Elliott. Heidi is involved in a local church, has way too many dogs, and loves time with her family. In addition to private practice, Heidi and her husband also own a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym and a transitional living program for young adult men in early recovery from addiction. Heidi also serves on the board of Men of Nehemiah, a faith-based, non-profit program for men with substance use disorders.

counseling style

Heidi does individual therapy, family therapy, and crisis consulting. While Heidi typically works with adults 18 and over, she will occasionally work with teenagers on a case-to-case basis. Heidi utilizes solution focused techniques, Reality Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Heidi also draws from the concepts of Motivational Interviewing to help clients move through the stages of change. Heidi is a Christian and if requested, is willing to provide counseling from a Biblical framework. However, Heidi works with people of all backgrounds, including all types of spiritual and non-religious belief systems.

Addiction Expertise

While Heidi works with all types of therapeutic issues, one of her specific areas of expertise is working with addiction and chronic relapse. She has worked with thousands of individuals suffering from substance use disorders as well as their families. As someone who has significant experience with the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and the program of recovery laid out in the first 164 pages, Heidi can therapeutically support those who are active in a program of recovery without creating conflicting messages. Heidi collaborates with treatment centers, transitional living programs, interventionists, education consultants and case managers to support the inter-disciplinary team it often takes to help those in early recovery.

Heidi is a trusted voice, author, and blogger on treating individuals suffering from addictive disorders. She had a featured article in “Addiction Professional Magazine” in both 2012 and 2014 as well as being a featured blogger. She has been featured in A&E’s “Intervention” as well as the National Geographic series “How Drugs Work.” In addition, Heidi has presented at the Cape Cod Symposium for Addictive Disorders, the National Association for Addiction Professionals Annual Convention, the Texas Association for Addiction Professionals Annual Convention, as well as numerous other national and local addiction conferences.

Heidi spent 4 years on staff at Nexus Recovery Center, a non-profit women’s addiction treatment center for women; 8 years as the clinical director and family program facilitator at Burning Tree Ranch, a long-term program for chronic relapsers; and since 2014 has served as the founder/owner/clinical director of Chapter House, a clinical transitional living program for men in early recovery.
